EU online graduate programs ranked among best in nation by U.S. News & World Report

Edinboro University’s online graduate programs in education and nursing are among the best in the country, according to rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report.

U.S. News ranked Edinboro’s graduate education offerings 84th of 278 rated programs and its graduate nursing programs 43rd out of 144 rated programs. EU was also ranked by U.S. News & World Report in the top tier in both online graduate education and online graduate nursing in 2016.

Edinboro’s online graduate nursing programs are offered in consortium with Clarion University.

“Edinboro University is proud that U.S. News & World Report has once again ranked our online graduate education and online graduate nursing programs among the very best in the nation,” said Dr. Alan Biel, dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research and the School of Education. “It is our mission to serve our region and Pennsylvania, as well as the nation, by producing the best possible professionals and by working with our K-12 partner institutions to meet critical regional needs.”

Biel said the rankings also reflect the commitment of Edinboro’s faculty, administration and staff to meeting and exceeding the needs of graduate students as they seek to advance their careers and expand their skills, typically while also actively working as educators and health-care professionals.

“These rankings verify that EU’s online graduate programs are academically rigorous yet flexible enough for working adults,” Biel said. “We are very pleased that our graduate programs, along with our students and faculty, are being deservedly recognized for their academic excellence.”

Since its founding in 1857 as the Edinboro Academy, a private training school for Pennsylvania teachers, Edinboro University has been at the forefront of teacher preparation.

Because of the rigorous standards for certification, recruiters from all over the country come to Pennsylvania looking for teachers, putting EU education graduates at the top of the list as schools look to fill the 170,000 teaching positions that become available nationwide each year. The state of Pennsylvania itself expects to have 4,600 openings for teachers every year through at least 2022.

The average starting salary for Pennsylvania teachers ranges from $40,000 to $45,000 annually, twice the average starting salary for all occupations in the state, with experienced teachers earning upwards of $65,000-70,000 per year.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated the programs based on statistical information about admissions selectivity, student engagement, faculty credentials and training, and student services and technology. The University offers seven online master’s degree programs in education: Master of Art in Art Education, Master of Education in Early Childhood Education, Master of Education in Educational Leadership, Master of Education in Educational Psychology, Master of Education in Middle & Secondary Instruction, Master of Education in Reading, and Master of Education in Special Education.

The EU-Clarion University consortium’s graduate nursing programs include both the Master of Science in Nursing and the Doctor of Nursing Practice. Current data from the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that 53,400 additional advanced practice registered nurses, including nurse practitioners, will be needed by 2024. Their median annual income in 2015 was $104,740.

Edinboro has been offering online classes since 2001. In addition to programs in education and nursing, degrees available online include the Master of Arts in Communication Studies, Master of Social Work, and Master of Arts in Counseling, which includes such tracks as Clinical Mental Health, College and School Counseling, as well as Art Therapy, which was the first entirely online graduate art therapy program in the nation.
