Edinboro University, Faculty Union Announce Positive Step Forward

The leadership teams of both Edinboro University and the Edinboro University Chapter of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) have worked together to avert the retrenchment of faculty in the coming year by identifying savings and efficiencies through attrition and other opportunities to align faculty work with Edinboro’s commitment to student success.

“My work over the past 14 months since my tenure began as President of Edinboro University has been dedicated to advancing this great institution to ensure a high quality educational experience for our students,” said Dr. H. Fred Walker, President, Edinboro University. “Further, I stated at the time the letter of retrenchment was issued that we would work together to explore all alternatives to retrenchment for the betterment of the University. Today we have achieved a major step forward toward those goals. I thank and commend APSCUF for their shared commitment through our work together over the past months to student success and the importance of continuing to build a positive future for EU.”

“We have always said our work is all about the students,” said Dr. Marc Sylvester, President, APSCUF, Edinboro University. “With today’s announcement we provide assurance and stability to the students that their faculty members will continue to deliver high quality classroom experiences. I thank President Walker for being true to his word when he said he would explore all alternatives to retrenchment and for providing an inclusive environment in our work together that allowed us to come to this positive outcome for all parties. EU’s future is indeed bright.”

A letter of possible retrenchment citing the potential of impact on faculty was issued to APSCUF on March 30, 2017, as required by the collective bargaining agreement between APSCUF and the Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Today’s action removes that letter.

President Walker will announce further elements of a path forward for the University next Thursday, September 7, in which he will discuss the role and responsibility of all areas of the University in advancing the school.
